Racing electric cars is becoming more and more popular, as even the fans want to support a sport that is doing everything they can to reduce their impact on the environment. This can be seen with the support for the Formula E World Championship. However, the introduction of the concept of an electric GT race car from Porsche starts a whole new conversation.
Recently, Porsche has presented a concept for an electric GT race car called the Mission R. With a focus on creating a car that can capture and keep the attention of race fans, as well as Porsche enthusiasts, Porsche is leading the way into new territory.
Meet the Mission R
At the recent Munich auto show, Porsche unveiled a concept for an electric-powered GT race car, the Mission R. Equipped with a qualifying mode boasting 1,073 hp, and a race mode capped at 670hp, the Mission R could be the future of GT racing.
With a 900-volt electrical system, the battery on the Mission R has approximately a 30-minute life when the car is in race mode, and can charge in about 15 minutes. Porsche states that the performance is similar to the 911 GTS Cup racer with 0-62 mph acceleration in less than 2.5 seconds and a top speed of over 186 mph. With specs like this, it’s easy to imagine a world with electric GT racing.
The Future of Porsche
According to Porsche, by 2030, they plan for 80% of their sales to be from electric vehicles. While the Mission R is their first concept for an electric GT race car, Porsche clearly plans on adding to their line of luxury electric vehicles, as well as race cars, in the near future.
